AI Copilot
Generate, edit and explain ToDiagram and Mermaid diagrams by describing them
ToDiagram Copilot turns a description into a diagram, changes an existing diagram when you tell it what to change, and answers questions about the diagram on the canvas. It works in ToDiagram and Mermaid tabs.
Generate a diagram
Open a new tab and type what you want in the prompt bar in the middle of the canvas, then click Generate Diagram. In a tab that already has a diagram, click the sparkle button at the bottom-left of the canvas to open the Copilot panel instead.
Watch the diagram build on the canvas. The result opens as a new tab, so nothing you already have is touched. From a JSON, YAML, XML or CSV tab it opens as a ToDiagram tab.
Refine it. Under the reply you get Simplify, Add detail, Regroup, Change direction and Explain, or type a follow-up such as "add a cache between the API and the database".
Prompts that work well:
- "Checkout flow with cart, payment, order service and an email confirmation"
- "Data model for a library: books, authors, members and loans"
- "Expense approval process: employee submits, manager reviews, finance pays"
- "Sequence diagram of a password reset with the user, web app, auth service and email provider"
- "AI engineering roadmap"
Name the parts you care about and the diagram will contain exactly those parts. For general topics such as a roadmap or "how does OAuth work", the Copilot fills in what an expert would draw. If the request is too short to draw from, it asks one question with options to pick from.
Edit a diagram
With a diagram open, describe the change in the panel: "rename Orders to Order Service", "group the payment nodes", "delete the cache", "make it flow top to bottom". The Copilot lists what it would add, change or remove and waits for you to click Apply change or Discard. Nothing changes on the canvas until you apply.
To scope a change to one part of the diagram, select a node and click the sparkle in the node toolbar, or right-click an edge and choose Ask AI.
Every applied change can be reverted with the Undo button at the top of the panel.
Turn an image into a diagram
Paste a screenshot, photo or whiteboard picture into the prompt box, or click the image button next to it to attach a file. Add a note if you want, then send. The Copilot reads the image and produces an editable diagram in a new tab.
Ask about a diagram
With a diagram open, ask a question instead of requesting a change: "what does the gateway talk to?", "which steps need approval?", "explain this diagram". The answer appears in the panel and the diagram stays as it is.
Mermaid tabs
In a Mermaid tab the Copilot writes Mermaid: flowcharts with shapes, subgraphs and labeled edges, plus sequence and entity relationship diagrams. Everything it produces is checked with the editor's own parser before it reaches the tab, so it always renders.
Privacy
Your prompt, the diagram in the active tab (or the selected nodes), any attached image and the last few messages of the conversation are sent to a third-party AI provider to produce the result. The provider does not retain them after the response and does not use them for training. Data in JSON, YAML, XML and CSV tabs is never sent.
The Copilot is included in Pro and Teams plans with a daily number of runs, shown in the panel. Free and Education plans see the upgrade prompt when sending a request.
